What is VoIP?

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. Rather than using the copper wire of an analogue phone line, you use your broadband Internet connection instead. For a more detailed explanation, click here.

VoIP Phone Systems

Your VoIP phone system consists of two key pieces of hardware:

  • The phone system that manages communication between your office phones and between your phones and the outside world
  • The phones themselves
1. Phone System Equipment

PBX or phone systems that handle processes like call handling, routing, automated responses etc. It's like a private phone exchange located within your office.

Businesses with existing 'traditional' PBX systems who don't want to replace them due to the expense, can retain their PBX and connect to VoIP with the help of some additional VoIP communication equipment.

2. VoIP Phones

1. PC based 'soft phone' - This allows you to use a headset plugged into your PC USB port with an application to make or receive calls. You can also install a soft phone application on your mobile phone.

2. Standalone VoIP phone - A VoIP phone looks similar to a regular office phone but doesn't need any adapters. It plugs straight into the Ethernet port on your network and this is completely separate from your PC. A VoIP phone offers the best call quality

3. ATA (analogue telephone adapter) - A telephone adapter plugs into your network and your regular phone. This is completely separate from your PC and it doesn't need to be switched on to make calls.

VoIP phone System installation - what you need to make the move

A broadband internet connection is required for using Voice over IP.

In some cases where internet usage is high, a dedicated ADSL Broadband for Voice over IP may be necessary. A dedicated ADSL internet connection is capable of supporting up to 20 concurrent calls depending on your system configuration. This is also dependent on the performance of the connection and a site survey may be required.

An area of the office will need to be chosen for the VoIP equipment to be setup. This needs to be a centralized point typically where the data or network wiring for your office computers comes back to. You will also need cabling from the central switch to each computer.

A site visit may be required to determine an appropriate location and if the wiring currently installed is not fit for this purpose, we can quote and install all the cabling for you.

How we help you make the move

For many people, telecommunications can be confusing and there is an overwhelming choice of equipment.

We are committed to providing you with the best VoIP solution for maximum call quality and cost savings.

How it happens

Please call us for a no-obligation discussion about whether VoIP is right for your office. Then:

1. We talk to you about what you need to make your business work efficiently and effectively:

  • How many phone lines you need
  • How much time people in your business spend on the phone
  • Mobile phone usage
  • If you need additional incoming phone numbers
  • Whether you have more than one business location or inter office calling

2. We find out what equipment you have at present.

3. We get a recent copy of your telephone bill to see:

  • What kind of calls you make
  • How many each month
  • Where you are calling

4. We provide you with a quote for installing or upgrading your current phone system and show you how much you could save.

5. We arrange for the new equipment to be installed
